Frequently Asked Question Posted 06/03/2026

I'm both the Director and Director of Photography on my project. Is there a way to have my name appear only once in reports as 'Dir/DP' instead of appearing twice in two separate fields?

MovieSlate has separate DIR and DP fields on the slate that map to their equivalents in formatted and NLE reports. For pre-formatted reports there is no way to merge these into a single labeled field, but you have two good workarounds depending on the report type you use:
For free-form reports (Plain Text, CSV, Formatted HTML):

  1. Go to Settings > History Reports > Report Contents.
  2. Either relabel the DIR or DP field to Dir/DP, or use one of the Data1Data6 custom fields and label it Dir/DP.
  3. Enter your name in that single field and leave the other (or both original fields) out of the report layout.

For pre-formatted and NLE reports (FCP X, Premiere, Resolve, etc.):
These reports map the DIR and DP fields to specific metadata fields expected by the NLE, so changing the label isn't straightforward. The simplest approach is to enter your name in both the DIR and DP fields on the slate — most post-production workflows treat them separately regardless.
To see the DIR and DP fields on the slate view if they're not visible, swipe the PROD / DIR / DP area to the right — these fields share real estate with the production logo and custom fields and can be toggled on or off.
