Frequently Asked Question Posted 07/21/2026

I updated MovieSlate in the middle of my shoot day and now the app has crashed repeatedly while I'm working in Script Dept. What should I do?

Repeated crashes that begin immediately after an in-place app update are almost always caused by the running app and the freshly installed version getting out of step — especially when the update installs while MovieSlate is open in the background. The first thing to try is a full device restart, not just relaunching the app.

  1. Force-quit MovieSlate. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen (or double-press Home) to open the app switcher, then swipe the MovieSlate card away.
  2. Restart the iPad. Hold the power button, slide to power off, wait about ten seconds, then power back on. A force-quit alone is not enough — a restart clears cached view state and reloads the updated PDF rendering libraries cleanly.
  3. Reopen MovieSlate and return to your project. In most cases the crashing stops here.

If the crashes continue after a restart:
  • Send us the crash reports. MovieSlate captures these automatically. Go to Settings > Help > Send Crash Report and email them to support. The report includes your app version, iPadOS version, device model, and the exact fault — that is what lets us reproduce and fix the problem quickly.
  • Note what you were doing when it crashed — for example, opening the thumbnail/page sidebar of a script PDF, importing a revision, or switching scripts. Crashes tied to a specific script PDF are often related to that file's page sizes, so tell us the script filename too.
  • Back up before troubleshooting further. Do a MovieSlate Cloud backup (or a project export) before deleting or reinstalling anything. Never delete the app to "fix" a crash without a backup in hand — your logged takes live inside the app.

Avoid updating MovieSlate mid-shoot when you can. Install updates before call time or at wrap, and restart the iPad once afterward, so the new version starts from a clean slate.
