Frequently Asked Question Posted 06/28/2026

I need MovieSlate's exported clip filenames to match my camera's filenames (for example, an ALEXA 35) so the clips link up correctly in Silverstack. How do I set the filename format?

MovieSlate builds clip filenames using the Filename Input Style tool, which assembles a name from tokens such as date, scene, and take. The tool ships with samples for several camera formats — pick the one closest to your camera as a starting point, then customize it to match your camera's exact naming scheme.
A few things to keep in mind:

  • The filename can include the date down to the minute (mm). If your camera's names include seconds (ss) and your version of the tool doesn't offer a seconds token yet, you may need to match those clips manually in Silverstack.
  • Some cameras append a short block of random characters or a checksum to the end of the filename (RED cameras have done this for years — e.g. the trailing a1CZK in B_0001C001_230814_143417_a1CZK). Most NLEs and media managers know to ignore that trailing portion when matching clips, but it isn't guaranteed across every editing or database app.

Because there are so many camera brands and models — many with user-defined naming — MovieSlate doesn't try to maintain a built-in profile for each one. Instead, the Filename Input Style tool and its samples let you build the exact filename format your workflow needs.
