Frequently Asked Question Posted 06/26/2026

My Progress Report is using the scene durations I estimated during pre-production breakdown, not the actual times each scene ran on set. Shouldn't the report update with the real times as I shoot each day?

This is working as designed, but it's easy to misunderstand. The numbers in your Progress Report come directly from the TIME value you enter while logging each scene — they are not calculated automatically from take durations.
Here's what's happening:

  • When you enter a new scene or take from the Script Dept logging screen, MovieSlate offers to pre-fill the TIME field with the estimate you entered earlier on the Breakdown screen. This is only a convenience so you don't start from scratch.
  • That pre-filled value is an estimate. While logging on set, you should type the scene's actual duration into the TIME field yourself, replacing the estimate. The Progress Report then reflects the real time.

MovieSlate cannot auto-calculate the TIME field for you, because a scene can have several takes and not every take runs the full length of the scene. As a reference, MovieSlate shows an AVERAGE TAKE label in the bottom-right corner of the TIME field, but that figure is for display only — it is always up to you to enter the scene's actual time using the field's keypad.
In short: to get accurate times in the Progress Report, overwrite the pre-production estimate in the TIME field with the real scene duration as you log each scene.
