Frequently Asked Question Posted 06/16/2026

After importing my script PDF, one or more scenes are missing from the Breakdown, and rescanning the PDF doesn't bring them in. How do I fix it?

This almost always happens when a scene's slugline (scene heading) is formatted in a way MovieSlate's scanner doesn't recognize, so the scene is skipped. Common culprits we've seen include:

  • An INT/EXT. prefix on the slugline (mixed period placement — some apps write INT/EXT., which differs from INT./EXT. or INT/EXT).
  • The word Intercut typed where the scene number would normally appear.

Rescanning won't help if the scene wasn't detected the first time — a rescan only finds new content when you've loaded a new revision or replaced pages.

Add the missing scene by hand

  1. Tap the Add New Scene button. This creates a scene record in the Breakdown whether or not the script scan found it.
  2. Enter the scene number and details, then drag it into the correct position (for example, place a new Sc 39 right after Sc 38).

A few things to know:
  • MovieSlate won't let you create a duplicate scene number. If you try, the SCENE field is simply cleared.
  • Check the page and time counts on the scenes next to the missing one. When a slugline isn't recognized, its lines can get counted into the previous scene's totals, so you may need to adjust them.

If you'd like us to improve detection for your particular script, email the script PDF to MovieSlate@PureBlendSoftware.com — we can often add a fix so the same formatting is recognized in future scans.
