Frequently Asked Question Posted 05/26/2026

How do I connect my Deity TC-1 timecode generator to MovieSlate using a wired cable through my iPad's headphone jack? The adapter that came with the TC-1 doesn't seem to work.

The Deity TC-1 can be used with MovieSlate via wired LTC sync through your iPad's 3.5mm headphone jack, but you must use the correct cable type. Here's how to get it working:

Why the Included Deity Adapter Won't Work

The adapter shipped with the TC-1 is a TRS-to-TRS cable. iOS devices require a TRRS connector (with an extra ring for the microphone input) to accept audio input through the headphone jack. Without that fourth ring, the iPad cannot switch audio input away from its built-in microphone, and MovieSlate will see no signal.

Cables That Work

Use a cable specifically designed for iOS LTC timecode input. The cables PureBlend recommends are the Remote Audio iPad LTC cables, which have the correct TRRS connector and a built-in pad to bring the TC-1's output to a level the iPad mic input can handle. See the Timecode Cables page on movie-slate.com for links.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

  1. Grant Microphone permission: In iOS, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and confirm MovieSlate is listed and enabled.
  2. Test the connection: In MovieSlate, go to Settings > Timecode + Sync > Test Headphone Connection. You should see signal on the meter when the TC-1 is outputting.
  3. Confirm signal source: Clap your hands near the iPad. If the meter reacts, the iPad is picking up its built-in microphone — not the TC-1. This means your cable does not have a TRRS connector.
  4. Check signal level: If signal is present but too low, switch the TC-1's LTC output level from MIC to LINE. If it's too high and causing clipping, the cable or adapter you're using may lack the correct pad.
  5. Verify the headphone port works: Plug in a pair of Apple wired earbuds (which have a TRRS connector and mic). If MovieSlate still sees no input, the iPad's headphone port mic input may be damaged.

iPad 8th Generation (Lightning) Tip

The 8th generation iPad has a Lightning port. If you're having persistent issues with the headphone jack, try using Apple's Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter with a TRRS LTC cable — this is often a more reliable signal path.

Note on Bluetooth / Deity Sidus App

The TC-1's Bluetooth sync is only available through Deity's own Sidus Audio app. Deity does not license its Bluetooth SDK to third-party developers, so wireless sync with MovieSlate is not possible with the TC-1. Wired LTC is the supported method.
