Frequently Asked Question Posted 06/23/2026

We can't get another iPad to sync with us in MovieSlate. Someone told us everyone has to be on the exact same app version. Is that the problem, and how do we get devices to sync?

A version mismatch is almost never the cause. As long as every device is running a version that has the sync features (8.9.44 or later, released in September 2024), small differences like 8.9.47 vs. 8.9.48 will not stop devices from syncing. Two other things are what actually matter:

  1. Local Network permission must be ON for MovieSlate on every device. Go to Settings > MovieSlate and turn on Local Network (you can also find the list under Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network). Without this, the iPads can't discover each other.
  2. All devices must be on the same Wi-Fi network. On managed or studio networks (a production office, a studio lot, guest Wi-Fi, etc.), client isolation can prevent devices from seeing each other even when they appear connected. In that case you may need the location's IT to put all the iPads on the same proper network.

How the roles work: one device acts as Logger A (the host) and the others join as Logger B (clients). A single Logger A can have multiple Logger B clients connected at once, so three or more people can sync together.
If it still won't connect, toggle Wi-Fi off and back on, confirm Airplane Mode is off, and make sure a VPN isn't forcing traffic off the local network.
