Frequently Asked Question Posted 06/05/2026

I'm using a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter to feed LTC timecode into my iPad, but that uses up the only USB-C port. How can I keep the iPad charged while it's on set receiving timecode?

When your iPad's USB-C port is occupied by a 3.5mm audio adapter for LTC timecode, you have a few options for simultaneous charging:

  • USB-C splitter adapter: A male USB-C to two female USB-C adapter lets you plug in both the audio adapter and a charging cable at the same time. Several options are available on Amazon — search for "USB-C dual adapter" or "USB-C splitter." Not all splitters pass power correctly, so check reviews before buying.
  • Lightning splitter (older iPads): If your iPad has a Lightning connector, a male Lightning to two female Lightning adapter works the same way and is widely available.
  • Apple Magic Keyboard for iPad: This is the cleanest solution. The Magic Keyboard has its own USB-C port for pass-through charging of the iPad, which leaves the iPad's USB-C port free for the audio adapter. Cliff Joyce (MovieSlate's developer) uses this setup daily on set.

Note: not all USB-C audio adapters pass audio and power simultaneously — a splitter adapter is specifically needed for that purpose.
