Frequently Asked Question Posted 05/27/2026

I have a production with pre-shoot days I want to label as Day -1 or Day -2, but I already have a Day 0 and Day 1 logged. How do I use the Search & Replace feature in MovieSlate to reassign those early shooting days to negative day numbers?

You can reassign shooting day numbers using MovieSlate's built-in Search & Replace tool in History. Here's the step-by-step process — be sure to follow the scoping steps carefully to avoid accidentally changing days in other projects:

  1. Go to the History tab and navigate into the specific project that contains the day you want to renumber. This is important: it limits the Search & Replace scope to just that project's takes.
  2. Tap the spyglass icon next to the search field at the top of the Shots list to open the Search & Replace tool.
  3. Tap Script in the department selector.
  4. Tap Day as the field to search.
  5. In the Search for field, enter 0 (the day number you want to change).
  6. In the Replace with field, enter -2 (or whichever negative day number you need).
  7. Tap the Newer Than filter and set the date to your project's Day 0 at 12:00 AM. This prevents the replacement from affecting takes in other projects that might also have a Day 0.
  8. Tap Go to execute the Search & Replace.

Tip: If you have multiple projects open, always navigate into the target project's takes in History before using Search & Replace — the scope of the operation follows your current History view.
