Frequently Asked Question Posted 04/30/2012

How can I use the Timecode Sync plugin with my DSLR or portable audio/voice recorder for my projects?

DSLRs like the Canon EOS 5D Mk II, Nikon D90, and the Sony NEX cameras are revolutionizing the quality of video production at their price points-- and that is AWESOME! Likewise handy audio/voice recorders like the Zoom H2N and H4N and Tascam DR-40 are bringing high-quality audio recording practically to your pocket.

But what these devices lack is the built-in LTC timecode support of their Pro Video/Audio siblings like the Canon XH G1S, the new Cinema EOS C300, Soundevices 788T, and Zaxcom Nomad.

So how can you improve your workflow with LTC when your gear doesn't support it? LTC can be recorded as an analog audio signal on one channel of your camera audio tracks (AUX TC), and on one channel of your audio recorder tracks. In post, you use software to decode and sync your media using those LTC channels. Avid seems to include this feature in MediaComposer, and Final Cut Pro 7 users can take advantage of VideoToolShed's "FCP auxTC reader" to convert the AUXTC signal to NLE timecode. http://www.videotoolshed.com/?page=products&pID=26

Ok, but what are the details?

Tyler Cartner wrote a great article on this subject last November and we couldn't do a better job explaining the workflow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAPwvkGuSN0
